Reading Gladiators Takeover

On Friday afternoon, the Y6 Reading Gladiators planned a reading afternoon for the whole school, taking over lessons and leading activities in classrooms.

Why reading is important

Each Gladiator visited a class to talk about reading: why it is important, what it has helped them to achieve, and how there is a book for everyone.

Reading Displays

In each class, the Reading Gladiators led a discussion about favourite books before sharing one of their own best-loved reads.

The children in each class were then invited to recommend a book for the children that move up to their year group in September.

Book Exchange

Every child in school was invited to bring an old book that they no longer read in order to exchange it for another that a friend had brought. Some children were extremely generous and brought in a number of books, and there was a real excitement about what book they might get.

Shared reading

Finally, at the end of the day, the whole school visited the field to hear stories read by their teachers. What a perfect way to end a day.

As well as this, parents were invited into school to hear their children read, and there was a Book Bus for every child to visit throughout the day.

Thank you to the Y6 Reading Gladiators for all their hard work in planning and carrying out the afternoon. All of the teachers were very impressed with your positivity!
